Design

Sink into plush white armchairs on your private veranda and feast on a mezze of tropical fruit and freshly baked bread, while heady wafts of coconuts and spices float through the air. Inside, billowing curtains reveal large four-poster beds with intricately carved headboards in the centre of simple yet elegant rooms. Woven palm leaves give the bandas a rustic feel, while plush furnishings and soft lighting ensures luxury is never left behind.

Activities

Plunge into the irresistible turquoise sea and discover some of Africa’s most magnificent dive sites mere metres from your bed. Featuring its own Padi Dive Centre, Mnemba Island offers the perfect location to learn or return to scuba diving, all in the most stunning of settings. If a trip below the waves doesn’t take your fancy, plentiful snorkelling is available right off the beach; glide through the calm water while the sun warms your back and the light dances on the colourful coral beneath you. As the sun sinks below the distant horizon, painting a myriad of colours across the infinite sky, relax with a private candlelit meal on the beach. Sink your toes into the soft sand beneath your feet and dine on exquisite fresh seafood while the gentle waves of the Indian Ocean lap the shore and trees rustle in the fresh sea breeze above your head.

Sustainability

&Beyond works in conjunction with the Wildlife Conservation Society on projects across Africa and, more specifically, the introduction of Ader’s Duiker onto Mnemba Island. The camp empowers local communities to enable them to work on conservation support schools and clinics across Africa. Their key ethos is care of the Land, wildlife and the people.

Why we love it

As well as its diverse and prolific marine life, Mnemba Island is home to one of the scarcest land animals on the planet. Ader’s duiker, the rarest antelope species in Africa, were successfully introduced onto the island as part of a conservation project in 2005. A timid and secretive species, Mnemba Island is believed to be one of the only places left in the world that these animals can be observed in the wild – a truly unique experience.
