This journey across Tanzania showcases some of the country’s most exceptional conservation success stories, highlighting the crucial efforts being undertaken by a wide-ranging network of uniquely qualified experts, including researchers, scientists and anti-poaching units. Travelling through these intricate ecosystems, you will come to understand how animal species and local populations interact, with Pelorus’s local connections in each region allowing you unprecedented access, providing a conservation-led safari experience unlike any other.

Embark on a helicopter safari for an incredible introduction to northern Tanzania, flying over protected wildlife areas and volcanoes, setting the scene for the exceptional days to come. View the Ngorongoro Crater from above, marvelling at the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world, estimated to be 2.5 million years old. Rich in biodiversity, with wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists, gaze out over the Rift Valley, before dropping steeply away to the northern end of Lake Natron.

Witness the ever-changing colours of the lake - reds, purples and oranges, a consequence of the algae which attracts thousands of flamingos. Fly onwards to the coolest active volcano in the world, Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the “Mountain of God” in Maasai. Peer into its bubbling crater, before returning to the southern shores of the lake to land at Ngare Sero, the largest preserved human fossil footprint site that has ever been discovered in Africa.

Community Conservation in Lake Manyara

After an exhilarating day in the air, arrive at your luxury safari lodge – a sanctuary in the palm-dotted plains and home of one of Tanzania’s leading conservation success stories. Spend the next few days exploring the 55,000-acre exclusive-use concession – learning about this keystone wildlife area, a corridor which connects the bird-rich waters of Lake Manyara and the vast savannah of Tarangire National Park. Hike a nearby hill, accompanied by a custodian from a nearby village, who'll share his local knowledge with you as you climb. Watch as the sun rises and take a moment to survey the land below to understand the significance of its proximity to the rural settlements that sit on nature's frontlines.

Visit the park HQ, gaining further insight into ongoing community projects, before a private tour of the workshops and facilities that drive the lodge's daily operations, learning about the challenges of balancing wildlife conservation with community upliftment. Set out on game drives in search of the region's famed Big Tusker elephants, some of the last of the large herds roaming in Africa. An early morning walking safari with your guide and a Maasai tracker is the perfect opportunity to tap into their bush knowledge, before visiting a woman empowerment project, learning how the economic training and educational courses have helped to change their lives. Visit the local primary school to spend time with the children and teachers in a classroom. Come evening, take a walk to the shores of Lake Manyara, ending the day with an unforgettable sundowner experience.

Research Cheetahs in the Serengeti

Explore Tanzania’s eastern Serengeti, an area renowned for its thriving cheetah population, where you will stay in a luxury tented camp. Here, meet with researchers from the Serengeti Cheetah Project (SCP), the world’s longest running scientific project on wild cheetah. Learn about the recent growth of the population and how information gathered by volunteers has contributed greatly to much of what is known about cheetahs in the wild today. Head out on a game drive alongside your guide, giving you the opportunity to actively participate in these studies by taking notes and photographing any cheetahs seen while out in the field. Walk through the grasslands, identifying anything you may have missed on a drive and ensuring that you fully immerse into this astounding landscape before departing to the Mahale Mountains, where an experience unlike any other in Tanzania awaits.

Chimpanzee trekking in Mahale

Touching down at a remote airstrip, head to your waiting boat to journey along the shores of Lake Tanganyika before reaching your final destination.  Set on a beach overlooking the lake with the forested slopes of the mountains in the background, this unique and rustic camp is perfectly positioned to allow you access to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in the world. Together with your guide and specialist trackers, head out on daily treks through the rainforest in search of the chimpanzees, and once located, cherish this rare opportunity to watch their captivating social and family interaction.

Look out for other forest wildlife including bushbuck and bush pig and enjoy numerous lake activities including fishing and kayaking. Evening options include simply relaxing on the shore in these beautiful surroundings, perhaps taking a lake cruise on a dhow, or a rejuvenating lake swim, ending with sundowners on the rocks, where drinks are served around the lamp-lit bar while the mountains disappear into the darkness.
