Savannah Varty

Product Executive

Growing up on a safari lodge in South Africa meant that from a young age, Savannah was instilled with a deep love and appreciation for the natural world. Throughout her early years, she travelled across Africa with her parents, filming wildlife documentaries and working with various conservation projects. She spent much of this time living in tented camps in the Maasai Mara in Kenya and on the banks of the Luangwa River in Zambia, with lion and leopard cubs, and even the odd warthog, as her childhood companions.

Returning home, she completed her university degree in Cape Town, before packing her bags to live and work in Aspen, Colorado for a winter ski season before relocating to London. Here she set about exploring as much as possible, between working at a renowned branding and design agency and pursuing her love of creative writing.

Adventure called, and she took a few months off to go backpacking across Europe, followed by a stint of volunteering at an organic wine farm in Tuscany. Having realised her passion for travel, she returned to the UK to work in the industry, specialising in destinations across Africa and the Indian Ocean. After a few years, she took the plunge to return to her home country and qualify as a safari field guide, fulfilling a lifelong dream, before pursuing her interest in sustainability consultancy and communications and finally coming full circle to join the travel team at Pelorus.

Savannah

Number one unforgettable travel experience?

Returning to the Maasai Mara in Kenya after twenty years and being reunited with the same warrior who had performed a naming ceremony for me and formed a friendship with my family. I was given the name ‘Nashipai’, which translates to ‘The Happy One’, and he had travelled specially to come and see me and warmly welcome me back.

Top of your travel bucket list?

Tracking jaguars in the Pantanal or gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda. I can’t decide which tops my list but seeing these animals in the wild and supporting the conservation projects dedicated to protecting them is a life goal.

Who is your ultimate travel partner?

Trevor Noah. A fellow South African with an incredible sense of humour and possibly the best imitator of accents out there – I know we’d have a blast.
