When we first told friends we were travelling to Mexico for five weeks with our baby, most people thought we were mad. Travelling that far, with a six month old, and working remotely at the same time felt ambitious even by Pelorus standards. But for us it was an opportunity to live what we believe in, that adventure can evolve with family life rather than pause because of it.

Over the past several weeks, I have been travelling through Mexico, working remotely, exploring new destinations, and discovering how this extraordinary country continues to redefine the art of travel. It was a journey that blended work and family life, research and reflection, and served as an opportunity to explore how Pelorus creates experiences that combine purpose, adventure, and connection.

This was also my first major trip abroad with my six month old son, and that in itself reshaped how I viewed travel. What I found was not limitation but possibility. With careful planning and the right rhythm, adventure with a young family becomes something new: slower, deeper, more observational, and in many ways even more meaningful.

A Journey Through Five Landscapes

We began in Mexico City, living between Roma Norte and Condesa, creative neighbourhoods that have become the heart of the city’s cultural renaissance. Full of design studios, concept restaurants, and leafy parks, it was the perfect base for remote work and urban exploration.

From there, we travelled to Oaxaca City for the Day of the Dead festival, one of the most vibrant cultural events in the world. The streets were alive with colour, music, and reverence, a celebration of life that captured what Pelorus strives to create: experiences that immerse travellers in the soul of a place, not just its surface.

The culinary journey was equally remarkable. In Mexico City, restaurants such as Caracol de Mar and Contramar redefined seafood with freshness and flair, while in Oaxaca, Criollo offered one of the most memorable dining experiences of the trip, refined yet deeply rooted in local tradition. Away from the restaurants, it was the food markets in the surrounding Puebla's that truly captured the essence of Mexican cuisine. The colours, aromas, and generosity of the market vendors embodied a culture that celebrates food as connection, storytelling, and identity. And of course, no trip to Oaxaca would be complete without a Mezcal tasting or two! The food and drink became one of the great highlights of the journey.

Our next stop took us to the Pacific coast, staying near Casa Wabi and later in a private beachfront villa near Puerto Escondido. The rhythm of life slowed completely, open air living, quiet beaches, and a deep connection to nature. Yet it also revealed an important insight for families: not all coastal hotels in Mexico accept young children, especially smaller boutique properties. It is a reminder of how vital expert local knowledge is when designing journeys that balance luxury, adventure, and comfort for every traveller.

From the coast we moved inland to Tepoztland, a mountain town known for its creative energy, spirituality, and slower pace, ideal for grounding and reflection. After weeks of movement, arriving here felt like a much needed exhale, a chance to reset and take in the landscape at a gentler rhythm. It was a reminder that travel does not always need spectacle, often the most meaningful moments come from simply being present together as a family.

Rethinking Luxury Family Holidays

Travelling with a baby has taught me that adventure evolves. It becomes about rhythm and patience, about finding joy in simplicity, and noticing the world through new eyes. A slower pace brings deeper connection, not just to place but to family. It also reaffirmed my belief that family travel should never be an afterthought in luxury. It should be reimagined as one of the most transformative ways to explore the world.

At Pelorus, our approach to luxury family travel reflects this philosophy. We design journeys that engage every generation, from first time parents seeking gentle exploration to multi generational adventures celebrating shared discovery. This year alone, we have taken babies on a yacht expedition to Antarctica and camping through the deserts of Oman, experiences that prove family travel and true adventure can go hand in hand. Whether tracking wildlife in Kenya, sailing the Greek islands, or exploring Mexico’s hidden corners, our goal is to shape experiences that inspire lifelong curiosity and connection.

The Value of Balance

This trip also demonstrated the growing flexibility of remote working, allowing professionals to balance momentum with family life. At Pelorus, we actively encourage this philosophy through our remote working programme, which offers every team member the opportunity to live and work abroad for up to three months. Over the past year, members of our team have taken this opportunity to live in Tromso, Cape Town, and Lisbon, gaining first hand insight into new destinations and cultures while continuing to deliver for our clients.

Mexico proved ideal for this balance: accessible, well connected, and offering a blend of culture, wilderness, and warmth. It reminded me that we can live and work globally without losing the essence of what makes travel meaningful.

As we expand our Pelorus family travel campaign, I hope this journey encourages others to explore the world with their children, to see travel not as a disruption to family life but as one of the most rewarding ways to enrich it. Adventure does not pause when family begins, with imagination and the right support, it only grows stronger.
