Zimbabwe's Adventurous Spirit: Discover on Land, Water and Air

Most go to Africa for the wildlife, but look a little further and it’s a continent that’s made for adventure. The best place to go searching for adrenaline? Zimbabwe. A frequented safari destination, there’s an adventurous side to the country that deserves exploration.

ON LAND

Thanks to the varied landscape, there’s a whole array of wildlife making it the perfect location for a safari. From game drives, horseback riding safaris and expert walking safaris, you’ll be able to get intoxicated in the wildlife (think lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants and rhinos). There are also myriad conservation opportunities for travellers, so spend a day in the Matobo Hills National Park tracking rhinos on foot, your expert guide providing you with a unique experience to get close up to these endangered animals.

For those that want to take the action up a notch, abseil to see Zimbabwe’s cliffs and falls from a completely new angle. There is also a range of hikes and treks that can be undertaken from the pine-covered hills in Chimanimani National Park to the red sandstone cliffs of Chilojo, (we’d recommend going at sunset when the colours dance over the cliffs, creating a spectacular sight).

BY AIR

Arguably Zimbabwe’s biggest draw, Victoria Falls is a majestic feat of nature. The best way to appreciate its magnitude is from above, with helicopter trips providing panoramic views of the falls, Livingstone Island and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. For adrenaline junkies, skydiving over the falls will provide memories to last a lifetime, giving you a fantastic experience and a story to tell on your return home. After a short flight boasting unparalleled, unobstructed views, take a leap with an expert before gliding down over the falls. Or soar in a microlight and feel the spray on your face.

There are so many other activities you can do in this area alone, with bungee jumping and bridge swinging a great alternative to sky diving for those who’d like the added reassurance of a tether to solid ground. Not quite ready to jump into thin air? Soar horizontally on a superman-style zipline and feel as if you’re flying as you take in the views of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River.

ON WATER

Zimbabwe’s dramatic Zambezi River provides a magnitude of adventures and natural wonders, from Victoria Falls to the devil pools that sit on the lip of a 108-metre drop into Bakota Gorge. The fourth largest river in Africa, the river is a playground for any adventure seeker.

The best way to experience the Zambezi is to be on it, and you’ll get closest to some of the ‘locals’ (read: hippos and crocodiles) this way. Glide down the river in a canoeing safari or step up the pace with an afternoon spent whitewater rafting.

For those looking for a leisurely time, Lake Kariba is a 300km long stretch teaming with a range of fish, from tiger fish and tilapia to bream and catfish. Keep an eye out for the vundu that call this lake home, a particular species of catfish that can grow to the size of a fully grown man.
