THE WILDS OF THE WEST: THE ALTAI

Begin in Mongolia’s far west, where the snow-capped Altai Mountains tower above vast valleys and nomadic tribes live freely. Here, you will be welcomed to your private camp, a collection of traditional domed gers, by your hosts – the legendary Kazakh eagle hunters. Among them is the renowned Eagle Huntress, Aisholpan, and her father, who will introduce you to their fascinating way of life over a feast of beshbarmak, celebrating your arrival to this incredible region. Spend a morning immersed in their nomadic lifestyle, helping with herding livestock and making traditional milk tea, before visiting a tribe of Uriankhai warriors, who will instruct you in the art of archery.

Today, meet with Mongolia’s foremost expert on snow leopard and Pallas’s cat conservation, Dr Munkhtsog, as you venture out together into the surrounding wilderness, looking for wildlife such as Siberian ibex, saiga antelope, grey wolf and corsac fox. Stop to set up and check camera traps along the way, all the while keeping an eye out for the elusive snow leopard. A passionate conservationist, he will share valuable insight into the work being done to protect these endangered species. This afternoon, a special gathering of hunters and their horses takes place as they demonstrate their strength and agility in an exciting display of Kazakh mounted games, followed by a concert of traditional music and dancing by the fire.

INTO THE DUNES OF ZAVKHAN

From Altai, board your private airplane to Zavkhan, an untouched land of turquoise lakes and golden dunes - this region’s remoteness means you’ll rarely see another traveller, experiencing only rugged grandeur and heartfelt hospitality. Your camp here is built entirely off-grid with lotus bell tents, starlit showers, and meals crafted by a private chef from freshly foraged ingredients. Spend a day exploring the Bugat dunes, hiking to a scenic picnic site before returning to camp to meet the resident yaks and try your hand at mixing their milk with vodka for a unique ‘cocktail’.

Hop aboard a quirky Soviet UAZ van and test your off-roading skills as you drive out to the foothills of a sacred mountain, before hiking to a camera trap site that is carefully positioned to spot snow leopards. Hike across scenic trails, stopping for a picnic lunch before arriving at your most remote and stunning camp yet, set up exclusively for you on the Baga Nuur lakeshore. Spend a day kayaking and birdwatching on the lake, climbing the dunes and marvelling at the incomprehensible views, with not a soul in sight. Return for an evening swim and sauna, reflecting on your time in one of the most untouched corners on Earth.

THE HEARTLAND: HERITAGE, HERDERS AND A MINI NAADAM

Fly onward to the central heartland of Mongolia, where mountains, dunes, and steppe converge. Hosted by a nomadic family, your camp is perfectly located to conclude your Mongolian expedition in style. Ride horses through the valleys of juniper to the foothills of Ikh Khaan, following a path to the ruins of a 16th century monastery to explore a series of beautifully decorated temples. This evening, enjoy a memorable dinner under the stars with Mongolia’s only astronaut, Mr. J. Gurragchaa – only the hundredth person ever to visit space. As night falls, this area’s lack of light pollution and the camp’s magnificent telescope allows you to explore the stunning night sky, watching as the constellations are brought to life through an expertly guided astronomy session.

Celebrate the grand finale of your time in Mongolia as you prepare for an exceptional send-off party with your very own Mini Naadam Festival. Join in the festivities as the locals prepare for an impressive display of Genghis Khan’s “three manly sports”: wrestling, archery, and horse racing. Competitors come from far and wide to take part in this authentic, community-driven tradition - with you at the centre. You may even find yourself awarding medals or joining a wrestling match, an especially fun way to explore local traditions and feel a part of this community that has allowed you unmatched access to their way of life throughout your exploration of Mongolia’s remotest regions.
