Location

Getting to Niokolodge is part of the adventure. The camp lies deep within Niokolo-Koba National Park in eastern Senegal, around 650 kilometres from Dakar, in a vast stretch of wilderness crossed by the Gambia River. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed park covers close to one million hectares, with wooded savannah, forests, wetlands and rocky hills creating a striking backdrop for safari. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, while the park’s varied habitats shelter wildlife including the rare Temminck’s red colobus monkey, West African lions, western giant eland, roan antelope, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and baboons. Niokolodge occupies a particularly impressive position, perched around 40 metres above the river. It feels far removed from the outside world and offers adventurous travellers the chance to discover a side of West Africa that few get to experience.

DESIGN

Niokolodge captures the spirit of an old-school safari camp but with some modern additions that make a stay in this largely untouched wilderness area more comfortable. Its spacious tented suites look out towards the Gambia River, keeping guests close to the landscape from the moment they wake. Inside are proper beds and quality linens, while private bathrooms and outdoor showers make getting ready in the bush part of the experience. Fans and fridges, as well as a Nespresso machines provide a few well-judged luxuries, though it must be stressed that the camp is pared back in comparison to other, more established areas of Africa. Open-sided communal spaces and shaded terraces make the most of the elevated setting, with the river and surrounding wilderness always in view.

ACTIVITIES

Niokolodge has all the ingredients of a proper safari adventure. Set out by 4x4 to track wildlife through the park, stay out after sunset for a night drive or take to the Gambia River by electric boat, watching for hippos, crocodiles and animals gathering along the banks. A six-kilometre riverside trail offers the chance to explore on foot, while dedicated hides and observatories bring guests quietly into the heart of the action. Further afield, Kédougou, Dindefelo Falls and the villages in Bassari country offer access to some of Senegal's most unique experiences, and work well paired with the safari activities on offer in Niokolo-Koba National Park. Back at camp, the pool is ready for a post-safari swim, while meals are served on river-facing terraces, with dining times arranged around game drives rather than the other way around.

SUSTAINABILITY

Niokolodge’s remote setting comes with a responsibility to protect it. The camp produces its electricity through photovoltaic panels and battery storage, allowing it to operate independently in the middle of the national park. Its conservation work extends well beyond the lodge itself, with support for park teams tackling poaching and bush fires, alongside efforts to protect Niokolo-Koba’s remaining elephants. The team is also involved in waste-management initiatives, wetland conservation and projects that support communities in neighbouring villages. For guests, this adds another dimension to the experience: a stay here provides access to an extraordinary wilderness while helping fund the work required to safeguard it. It is a strong example of adventure travel and conservation working side by side.
