Prosperous Phuket

Flying over the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, your coastal journey begins on the tropical island of Phuket. Jungles, beaches and nature beckon, along with a thriving cultural scene. Once the hub of the 19th century tin trade in Southeast Asia, Phuket’s diversity has created a fascinating mixed culture of local beliefs, architecture, cuisine and art. Zip around the Old Town on scooters, visiting galleries, boutiques and street food haunts, before ending the day at an immersive dinner theatre show, where musical numbers, acrobatic dance routines and comedic skits welcome you to Thailand with gusto.

Today, a private visit to a nearby elephant sanctuary awaits, exclusively yours to enjoy. Spend a few serene hours with these elephants that are being rehabilitated after decades of abuse, feeding and interacting with them as they bathe and play together. Learn about their habitats and behaviour from their caretakers in this truly intimate wildlife encounter. This evening, you will be hosted by a Michelin-starred chef for a special cooking class, teaching you to prepare fragrant Thai food with a twist.

TRIBAL ENCOUNTERS IN THE SURIN ISLANDS

Located further up the west coast are the Surin Islands; undoubtedly some of the most stunning in Thailand. Meet your guide and translator, a local anthropologist, who will accompany you to meet members of the Moken tribe – ancient sea-faring people who have roamed the ocean for thousands of years. Travel to their village by boat and gain an intriguing insight into the intricate relationship between these tribespeople and their surroundings. Visit a traditional home built on stilts and dine together whilst listening to their powerful tribal songs and stories.

Embark on a snorkelling adventure with a Moken guide to experience the underwater life of these “sea gypsies” firsthand. Witness their incredible knowledge of the reefs and how they have adapted to living in the water, holding their breath for far longer than the average human. Spot sea turtles, sharks and manta rays and learn the exceptional art of spear fishing and free diving from a Moken nomad, an experience you will never forget.

Board your helicopter for a scenic flight to the mainland as you enter Namtok Ngao National Park. You will be greeted by a local wildlife guide who will take you hiking through the jungle, spotting elephants, monkeys and incredible birdlife along the way. Learn about the uses of plants and trees that support the livelihoods of the fascinating local people who have survived off the land for centuries. Swim beneath a beautiful waterfall before bathing in delightfully secluded hot springs, soaking up the natural beauty of this wild area.

PHANG NGA BAY'S ISLAND CHARM

Boasting over 100 islands, Phang Nga Bay is an exquisite area of limestone stacks rising out of crystal-clear waters. Hop aboard your chartered yacht to cruise the bay, where a day of coastal exploration awaits. Kayak through beautiful karst islands, viewing the stunning limestone caves and mangrove forests of Koh Pak Bia, Koh Lao Lading, and Koh Hong, before gliding into the hidden Hong Lagoon. Returning before sunset, your crew will prepare a superb dinner onboard, before the evening’s enchanting activities begin. Paddling into caves illuminated by natural phosphorescent plankton, you will stop to float a krathong in the sea (a traditional decorated offering used in Thai ceremonies).

Rise early, before heading out to wander through the idyllic village of Panyee, built above the water on stilts. Immerse yourself in the labyrinth of vibrant visuals, exciting smells, market vendors and chefs cooking, savouring a delicious local lunch. Next, make your way to a traditional Thai retreat, where you will be instructed in the art of Thai boxing by an ex-champion. Explore the sanctuary grounds, before witnessing a private boxing match between two professionals, accompanied by a Thai folk band.

THE DUGONGS OF KO LIBONG

Journey south to Ko Libong, the largest of the Trang Islands, however one of the least visited. A truly local island, unspoiled by mass tourism, the island is renowned for the estimated 200 endangered Thai dugongs that live and feed on seagrass in the surrounding waters – about 70% of the total population. Boarding a traditional longtail boat – an iconic symbol of Thailand’s coastal waters – you will go in search of the local population of these incredible marine creatures, accompanied by an expert dugong researcher and conservationist.

Throughout this conservation experience, you will gain an endearing insight into the dugongs’ habitat, behaviour and actions required to prevent ever-decreasing numbers. Visit the local research centre, meeting members of the community who have been a crucial part of the dugong education and conservation program, before climbing to the limestone summit of Dugong Point, gazing at the spectacular views out over the Andaman Sea.
