Location

One of only 2 properties in the area, King Lewanika Lodge sits within the vast wilderness of Liuwa National Park, an extraordinary area of over 3,300 square kilometres of pristine grassland. Poised on the edge of a rare woodland in the lodge looks out across the seemingly infinite horizons of the Liuwa Plains, where sky and savannah blur into one. This privileged setting places you at the heart of one of Africa’s great natural spectacles: the continent’s second-largest wildebeest migration, a dramatic and little-known phenomenon unfolding far from the crowds. Beyond the migration, Liuwa is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, offering an authentic, untamed safari experience defined by scale, solitude and raw natural beauty.

Design

Designed with a distinctly super-luxe sensibility, the lodge remains deeply rooted in classic safari lodge tradition. Metal roofed tents with canvas walls and raised decks open directly onto the plains, and you can unwind on your private deck as birds swoop above the grasslands or drift off beneath vast starry skies to the distant calls of whooping hyenas. The central camp is home to the lounge, bar and dining spaces, thoughtfully crafted in timeless canvas and timber. A generous raised deck delivers sweeping views across the Liuwa Plain National Park, complete with a fire pit. A brand-new pool sits secluded at the edge of the woodland. Architecture and interiors echo the broad horizons of Liuwa, with warm golden tones balanced by vintage leather and burnished metal accents.

Activities

There are a whole host of activities here including day and night game drives, walking safaris, canoe safaris and fly camping further north, under the stars – all offering the chance to see some incredible wildlife and birds. Venture out in search of lions and cheetahs or from March to June, take to the seasonal flood plain by canoe and surround yourself with a dazzling abundance of bird species. Alternatively, learn about the rich cultural heritage of the local Lozi people and their history of honey and dried mango production. Throughout your stay, enjoy fresh local cuisine and indulge in experiences such as bush brunches, starlit dinners, remote plain picnics and sundowners.

Sustainability

King Lewanika safari lodge are committed to preserving and protecting Africa’s vulnerable wildlife and habitats, supporting anti-poaching, environmental education, human-wildlife conflict and wildlife rehabilitation efforts. The camp is built using local techniques and sustainable local materials, and is run on solar power. The property is also dedicated to the community, employing locally as well as sourcing most of their fresh produce from neighbouring communities.

Why we love it

Western Zambia’s lesser-known wildebeest migration provides a dramatic backdrop to one of the most immersive experiences: fly camping on the Liuwa Plain. As the rains arrive, wildlife moves across the grasslands and predators follow, but it’s at night - lying beneath vast, star-filled skies with the sounds of the plains all around - that this place truly comes alive. It’s a rare opportunity to experience Africa in its rawest, most elemental form.
