Location

First established in the 1900s when explorers first flocked to the Delta, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge has refined safari living to a fine art. Nestled in one of Botswana’s most beautiful locations, this intimate water-focused safari retreat is surrounded by an amazing array of wildlife and plant life. This seemingly endless network of channels, tributaries, lagoons and islands provides so much adventure for guests to explore, and the lodge offers so many ways to do so: explore the region by local canoe, roam on foot or take to the air in an exhilarating helicopter flight.

Design

With just 12 tents, Eagle Island Lodge is a peaceful retreat. Built upon raised wooden platforms, these aren’t any old tents: each has its own plunge pool, a large outdoor deck overlooking the Delta, day beds and personal bars. The décor is sophisticated, marrying dark wood and grey bed linen with vintage and industrial touches. With a front-row seat to the passing wildlife, you certainly won’t be roughing it.

A group of three people is rowing a small boat across a tranquil river at sunset. The sun casts a warm glow, reflecting on the water's surface. One person is standing with a paddle, while another sits calmly and the third waves cheerfully. Trees line the riverbank in the background.

Activities

There is so much to do here and, with its unique waterfront location, make sure to take to the Delta and explore. Safaris on foot or by mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) offer a calm way of exploring the surrounding locale and sighting wildlife. Or, to get closer to the action, horse riding is a fun way of covering more ground. But we’d recommend the helicopter safari to see the Okavango Delta as you have never experienced it before: spot remote, inaccessible lakes and islands as well as an abundance of wildlife from the sky.

Sustainability

The lodge supports Wild Entrust Africa to help mitigate the lethal conflict between predators and people in Northern Botswana. Their ground-breaking scent-mark research keeps predators away from livestock and safely inside protected wildlife areas

Why we love it

This lodge takes safari to a whole new level. Done a game drive or walking safari? No problem. Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is revolutionising how its guests view wildlife, offering the chance to soar above the Delta at sunrise before touching down and continuing the journey on horseback. And, with such a fantastic location, it’s only natural that they encourage guests onto the water on a mokoro (traditional canoe) safari where you can expect to drift along peacefully and catch sight of giraffe and antelope drinking at the edges.
