Design

The island of Sumba is a jewel in Indonesia’s necklace of islands. The resort itself is set on a deserted stretch of private, gold-sand beach backed by raw, tropical jungle. A cluster of 27 stunning villas and treehouses all in varied shapes and sizes, in treetops or on the water's edge, all boasting views of the ocean with large four poster beds, private infinity pools, private terraces, large en-suite bathrooms, and private butlers on hand.

The décor is authentic and simple with grand marble floors, big windows and large open lounges. The buildings reflect the local Sumbanese architecture, with traditional grass-thatched Menara roofs, teak wood and local artworks.

Mamole Treehouse

We would recommend staying in the Mamole Treehouse, built around a large trunk of a tree with three separate, breathtakingly beautiful villas, designed for those wanting to be in peace with nature. This treehouse also has a private terrace with panoramic views of the ocean, perfect for enjoying a sundowner whilst watching evening surfers.

Dining Experience

The dining at NIHI Sumba is phenomenal, with fresh food being sourced locally from the onsite organic kitchen gardens and chicken farm. Fishermen go out daily to collect seafood and then cook it delicately over an open fire, with a multitude of flavours and ingredients for your senses to enjoy.

The main restaurant, Ombak, is an open-air restaurant at the heart of NIHI Sumba and serves an à la carte breakfast and evening meal, with a relaxed and congenial ambience. Head down to the Nio Beach Club for a delicious lunch and cocktails just a stone's throw away from the ocean, or if you fancy exquisite sushi, head to Kabuko - also on the beachfront.

Activities

At NIHI Sumba, you’ll never be short of activities. Go sunset horse riding along the beach, practise morning yoga in the pavilion, or embark on a three-mile trek through the jungle seeking out the wildlife along the way. For the ultimate relaxation, head down to the Boathouse spa where you’ll find a full menu of treatment options to immerse yourself into a state of serenity.

Sustainability

The belief in sustainable and ecologically viable development drives NIHI Sumba, whose members participate in the Pack for a Purpose Initiative. The resort covers all administrative costs of the Sumba Foundation, which focuses on providing humanitarian aid through community-based projects in the area.

Why we love it

We would recommend a sunset horseback ride along the beach, where you’ll end up cooling off with the horses in the sea, whilst watching them splash about. A truly mesmerising experience.
