Location

Suspended mid-air on a cliff overlooking the Maasai Mara plains, Angama Mara has an utterly mesmerizing view. In the heart of the Mara Triangle, this lodge brings luxury to the usual safari experience courtesy of glass-fronted tents (keep an eye out for the abundance of wildlife roaming the area), incredible cuisine, and warm hospitality.

The Mara Triangle offers guests year-round wildlife sightings, and Angama’s location on a private conservancy allows for the freedom to go far beyond only early morning or late afternoon game drives. As well as drives, the lodge offers guided walking safaris, hot-air balloon rides, visits to a traditional Maasai village and picnics on the site used in the iconic film, Out of Africa.

What makes this property unique?

Angama is modern and unique, with extra touches coming from the incredible staff make this one of the most special properties you’ll visit. The views of the Big Five are unrivaled: wake before dawn and float above the Mara in a hot air balloon or relax in a rocking chair on your private deck looking out over the vast landscape. All this, combined with special dining experiences (think bush BBQs and private picnics in the Mara) mean you’ll experience the bush like never before.

Design

There are two totally separate camps, both with 15 tented suites that are more akin to open-planned apartments with their glass façade overlooking the Maasai Mara and expansive deck. To ensure you get the best vistas as well as privacy, the tents are spread along the escarpment, so each boasts undisturbed 180-degree views. Inside, they are comfortable with splashes of Maasai red and French khaki to reflect the location and its owners. Guests are also appointed their own ‘butler’ for the duration of their stay.

Why we love it

Wake before dawn to head out with your guide for an action-packed safari adventure like no other, before returning to camp to follow the sound of the rhythmic chanting of the Maasai warriors to the sundowner boma, where a gin and tonic, delicious snacks and a sunset performance awaits. The menu changes daily, with international dishes rooted in local Kenyan cuisine and paired with exceptional South African wines. There’s no shortage of places to dine: enjoy a bush lunch under a tree in the Mara, a lantern-lit barbeque in the forest, or breakfast on your private deck watching the hot air balloons float by.
