Kenya tribe

Settled by former nomadic herders whose ancestors migrated from South Sudan 300 years ago, Kalepo Camp is a small, exclusive-use outpost within the 390,000-acre Kalepo Conservancy. Set in a shady grove of acacia trees with the majestic Mathews Mountains as a backdrop, this truly wild slice of Kenya is the perfect gateway to Turkhana and beyond.

The camp is only booked out on a private basis, so your group can enjoy having this wild space all to yourselves. There are three double/twin ensuite tents sleeping six, with an additional family unit made up of adjacent double/twin ensuite tents that can sleep four. Open to the elements, shower under the stars or listen to birds chirping as you wash your hair in the morning, and watch as elephants stroll past the camp to drink at the waterhole.

What makes this property unique?

There’s an incredibly diverse range of activities at Kalepo Camp. Enjoy a heart-warming visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, embark on helicopter excursions to otherwise inaccessible areas such as Lake Turkana, and head out to explore on guided bush walks. But arguably the biggest draw here is the Samburu people. Like the Maasai, they are nomadic pastoralists, moving from one place to another in search of fresh pasture and water for their cattle. However, they’re considered even more traditional and remote and have maintained their ancient traditions despite modern trends. At Kalepo, you’ll have the chance to witness their traditional way of life first hand and immerse yourself in their culture.

Why we love it

Putting community at the forefront, experience everyday life in local Samburu villages, meeting local people and immersing yourself in daily activities including the ‘morning milking’ and witnessing the spectacle of the ‘singing wells’. Kalepo’s passion for food shines, and much of the produce used is grown on-site. From western favourites like wood-fired pizzas to authentic Swahili cuisine, dishes are delicious and can be tailor-made to any and all dietary requirements.
