Borana Conservancy, Kenya

At the heart of the Borana Conservancy, Lengishu is an exclusive-use family home offering unparalleled luxury and endless adventure in Kenya’s wild Northern Frontier.

Key Features

  • Exclusive use, private ranch-style main house with 2 stand-alone double rooms and 2 family-style cottages accommodating 6 to 12 guests
  • Excellent Big Five wildlife viewing, especially black and white rhino, with game drives, guided bush walks, bird watching and horseback safaris available across this unique landscape
  • A wide array of activities including mountain biking, horse riding for all levels, rhino tracking on foot, forest picnics, as well as visits to local communities and behind-the-scenes access to conservation projects
  • Located on the Borana Conservancy, one of Kenya’s best areas for wildlife, with breathtaking views over the valley below extending to the Lengishu Hills

Nestled into a ridge with stunning views across the Laikipia Plateau and the Northern Frontier, Lengishu is located in one of Kenya’s leading wildlife destinations. In the foothills of Mount Kenya, the Borana Conservancy offers a variety of habitats and wildlife: arid landscape to the north and ancient indigenous forests to the south, with a thriving population of over 200 black and white rhino.

Blending seamlessly into its surroundings and built entirely out of sustainable materials, the house has been crafted by local artisans using Kenyan timber, stone excavated from the site itself, as well as earth from the hillside to clad the walls. Inside, the interiors are tasteful with a neutral color palette interspersed with splashes of red in a nod to the owner’s Scottish heritage and that of their neighbors, the local Samburu community.

What makes this property unique?

Four cottages are arranged along the hillside, accommodating 6 to 12 guests, making it the ideal private home for families or large gatherings. The bedrooms are spacious, with fireplaces or wood-burning stoves for those colder evenings, as well as ensuite bathrooms boasting freestanding bathtubs and floor-to-ceiling windows – perfect for bathtub game viewing. All rooms face east over the valley below, offering spectacular sunrise views which can be enjoyed from the balconies (each bedroom has its own private veranda).

In the main house is where you’ll find the communal gathering spaces, and these include a vast open-plan drawing and dining room and a smaller TV room/study. There is also a multi-functional studio which can transform depending on the group’s needs: a massage and yoga studio, nursery or den.

Step out to the pool where you can keep an eye out for elephants at the watering hole below, with a gym, games room and terrace dining area close by. A rocky viewpoint located just a short walk away presents the ideal spot to watch the sunset. There is also a terrace at the main house – the favorite for an alfresco breakfast.

Why we love it

Located in one of Kenya’s best wildlife destinations, the wide range of activities on offer go far beyond the traditional vehicle-based approach to safari.  There is something for everyone, from private game drives and mountain biking or horse riding through the conservancy to visiting world-renowned conservation projects. There are various terraces and outdoor spaces to enjoy alfresco dining and wildlife-watching from: sight elephants at the watering hole from the pool, sip sundowners at the rocky viewpoint, or savor an alfresco breakfast on the main terrace.
