Location

Funken Lodge occupies an elevated position above Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town. Located on the Svalbard archipelago, this remote Norwegian territory lies deep within the High Arctic, just 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole. Accessible by direct flights from Oslo and Tromsø, it is surrounded by a vast protected wilderness of glaciers, fjords and jagged mountain peaks, where polar bears outnumber people and the landscape remains largely unchanged since the age of the great explorers. In winter, the polar night transforms the sky into a stage for the Northern Lights, while in summer, the endless Midnight Sun bathes the tundra in an otherworldly glow. Design

Originally constructed in 1947 as a social and residential hub for senior figures within the Store Norske coal mining company, Funken Lodge carries almost eight decades of Arctic history within its walls. Renovated to mark the building’s 70th anniversary, its design balances this heritage with contemporary Nordic comfort. Warm tones, natural materials and considered details reference Svalbard’s mining and exploration history, while king-sized beds, rainfall showers, integrated sound systems and floor-to-ceiling mountain views create a refined base in the High Arctic.
