South Africa is a country most visitors approach with a single ambition: finding the historically named "Big Five"; lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. With Pelorus, the Big Five becomes a different proposition altogether: the historians who have spent their lives walking the battlefields, the conservationists who built a wildlife reserve from empty farmland, the epicureans reimagining African food culture, the curators who have made Cape Town one of the most compelling creative cities on the continent, and the winemakers who will open bottles most visitors never know exist. Five fields of expertise, five groups of remarkable specialists, each one offering a true understanding of South Africa’s culture, traditions and history and whose knowledge, access and passion transform every encounter into something that stays with you long after the journey ends.

THE HISTORIANS

Your exploration begins at a private nature reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, home to six distinct ecosystems and an abundance of wildlife. This evening, over an intimate dinner at the lodge, your first South African specialist, the renowned storyteller Michael Charton, expertly sets the scene. From the warriors of the Anglo-Zulu War, King Shaka and Cecil John Rhodes to Nelson Mandela, modern-day freedom fighters and warring governments, he introduces you to each character, explaining how their role shaped the country you are about to explore. These enthralling stories each represent a turning point, bringing history into vivid focus. By the time the evening ends, you have the context and the curiosity to see what comes next with new eyes.

The following morning, board a private helicopter for a scenic flight towards the Drakensberg mountains, the ancient "Barrier of Spears," where dramatic peaks and cascading waterfalls spread across the horizon. Touch down at the Anglo-Zulu battlefields to spend the day in the company of two of the country’s most respected authorities. David Bristow, an environmental scientist and author accompanies you as you embark on an exclusive tour of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, guided by expert historian and storyteller, Doug Rattray. Having inherited his late father's passion for the Anglo-Zulu War, Doug has spent his life immersed in this region and will introduce you to its intricacies with the intimacy of someone for whom this ground is deeply personal, giving you unmatched insight into this period of history.

THE CONSERVATIONISTS

Begin your morning with a private game drive into the ancient sand forest, where you swap the vehicle for an e-bike and take to the trails. Ride between towering trees, before navigating back to the lodge on foot, where your ranger will guide you through birding, plant identification and tracking exercises, showing you how to read the ground for signs of wildlife. This evening, you will receive a private briefing by Les Carlisle, one of South Africa's most significant conservation figures. Having played an instrumental role in converting this bare farmland into a thriving nature reserve, Les’ expertise in game translocation is world-renowned. His briefing is less a talk and more a masterclass in what it takes to build a living ecosystem from nothing, and what it means to keep it alive.

Ready for your conservation day, take part in a bird ringing exercise, netting birds, recording key measurements and releasing them tagged for future monitoring. Alternatively, upon special request, you could assist during the ear-notching or dehorning of a black or white rhino. A wildlife vet will locate and dart the animal from a helicopter while you and the ground crew follow in open safari vehicles. Once the rhino is sedated, the veterinary team will notch its ear for security monitoring and insert a microchip into the horn, and you will have the opportunity to participate in the procedure and touch the animal directly. This is one of the most affecting conservation experiences available anywhere in Africa, allowing you to have a direct impact on the survival of this species.

THE EPICUREANS

Fly to Cape Town by private airplane, trading the bush for a city that wears its contradictions with flair: colonial architecture and contemporary street art, world-class restaurants, ancient spice routes and innovative kitchens. Your first afternoon is spent with Dennis Molewa, a food storyteller, social entrepreneur and advocate for social equity in the food industry. Dennis guides you on a privately curated culinary city tour that moves through the vibrant African diaspora communities of Cape Town, introducing you to local chefs whose cooking tells the story of a continent. This evening, you may want to visit the home of Karen Dudley, one of Cape Town's most beloved culinary figures, or join chef and jazz musician Jade De Waal, for an evening of cooking, “food jamming” and musical magic.

The following day carries you out of the city to Meuse Farm in Hout Bay, a three-acre organic vegetable and herb farm that supplies Cape Town's top restaurants. You are welcomed by Iming Lin, the founder and owner, followed by an intimate sound immersion experience, private art workshop and farm-to-table lunch, thoughtfully prepared using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Come evening, you ascend Table Mountain by private cable car, arriving at the summit to music, champagne and canapés before an evening of food artistry with acclaimed chef Peter Tempelhoff, owner and founder of FYN restaurant. Dine on a tasting menu of South African and Japanese fusion as the sun sets, marvelling as the city lights sparkle below you.

Today begins with a scenic helicopter flight over the Atlantic Seaboard and the Cape Point coastline to join wild food artist Roushanna Gray for a coastal and fynbos foraging experience along one of the most biodiverse stretches of shoreline on earth. Forming part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area is home to more than 250 bird species, Cape mountain zebra, as well as Cape clawless otters and the endangered African black oystercatcher. Forage for wild flavours gathered from the mountainside, seaweeds from the rock pools, or edible flowers from the gardens, dining at the Veld and Sea Glass House, set between the fynbos mountainside and the Atlantic Ocean. After lunch, visit the famous African penguin colony at the beach before heading back to the city along the extraordinary coastal road, with a new appreciation for the close relationship between food and nature.

THE CURATORS

Cape Town's art and design scene is best understood not through gallery walls alone but through the people who populate it. Accompanied by art specialist Kate Briggs, visit leading galleries, including the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and the old masters' collection at Ellerman House, or discover hidden collections in private museums and homes across the city. Meet the artists at their studios, each practising across a range of mediums that includes painting, collage, illustration, street art, ceramics and animation. For those seeking something beyond the conventional gallery circuit, a visit with animator, sculptor and painter Ree Treweek opens the door to a singular creative world, with an exclusive animation screening that provides rare and intimate insight into a creation process that most audiences never see.

For those fascinated by craft, visit the dye house and design studio where founder Bridget Henderson hand-dyes South African merino wool and mohair, working with this exquisite natural fibre of which South Africa produces sixty percent of the world's supply. Be guided through the world of mohair and try your hand at spinning and dyeing your own scarves or skeins of wool. Or, meet with blacksmith artist Conrad Hicks, discussing the history and evolution of toolmaking, before you move to the forge to create your own object: a knife, a small sculpture or a copper bowl, made, polished, ground and treated under close guidance. Otherwise, join celebrated botanical artist Kim Black to paint the indigenous fynbos of one of the world's great botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch, with Table Mountain as your backdrop.

THE SOMMELIERS

The final chapter of your story carries you into the Cape Winelands, where the valleys of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch hold estates that have been producing celebrated wine since 1685. In Franschhoek, best known for its elegant whites and Cap Classique, move through the vineyards, statue gardens and hidden corners of three iconic estates, tasting nine wines across the day and sitting down to a harvest-style lunch in the valley. Be hosted by Fiona MacDonald, one of South Africa's most respected wine writers, judges and educators, bringing two decades of experience and a storytelling warmth that brings the history, culture and character of South African wine to life in the most accessible and compelling way.

The following day takes you into the historic town of Stellenbosch for a guided culinary tour, meeting local chefs and being introduced to the vibrant flavours that define the town's food identity, before heading to the first of the day's wine estates. Meet winemaker Reenan Borman at his family-owned Boschkloof Estate, or visit Fijnbosch Estate, for a private tasting of the Capensis Chardonnay range, hosted by connoisseur Matt Sterne. Finally, over a chef-led dinner at Waterford Wine Estate, hosted by Kevin Arnold, Cellar Master and managing partner, your journey comes to a close, as you share stories and reflect on your time spent exploring the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal and the studios of Cape Town, to the vineyards of the Western Cape, in the company of the people who know and love South Africa most.
