Amanzoe

Porto Heli, Greece

Overview

This is truly a modern-day Acropolis, where 360-degree views stretch from ancient olive and cypress groves to the Aegean Sea. Here, the old world meets the new, with an ethos of wellness and relaxation permeating throughout, and the design complimenting the natural surrounds. Pavilions and villas with private pools open onto fragrant gardens, and speedboats await at the beach to zip between nearby islands.

Key Features

  • An idyllic retreat overlooking the Aegean Sea
  • 38 guest pavilions with ocean or valley views, as well as 12 spacious private villas and four beach cabanas with direct access to the beach
  • The spa offers excellent treatments using its own products, with yoga, tennis, watersports and a gym also on offer
  • A selection of restaurants offering carefully curated contemporary Greek, Mediterranean and Asian fare

Scattered with UNESCO-protected ruins, the beach-fringed Peloponnese has been at the heart of Greek culture for millennia. Amanzoe rests on its east coast on a hilltop, amid olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees, and is ideally placed for exploring the wealth of ancient archeological sites nearby.

On your doorstep, there are some magnificent places of antiquity: Epidaurus with its iconic amphitheater, the Sanctuary of Asklepios (the most renowned healing center of the ancient world), the citadel of Mycenae, the ancient capital of Nafplion, and the Temple of Hera - as well as the pretty islands of Spetses and Hydra within easy reach.

These aren’t mere rooms. Here, every guest gets their own free-standing private pavilion, styled with pale walls and natural stone features. Choose between views of the olive groves or over the sea and, if traveling as a family or large group, opt for one of the villas ranging from four to six bedrooms and a team of staff (including a dedicated chef and a host) that will ensure your every need is attended to.

Amanzoe has two full-sized swimming pools (one for children), but it’s the main pool that you’ll want to lounge around: infinity-edged, it’s impossible not to get lost in the exquisite countryside views. But each pavilion also comes equipped with its own private pool, if you’re after something more secluded. A short drive away, there is also the private Beach Club where you can find two more pools and a sheltered bay to swim in.

The restaurants here are excellent thanks to executive chef Dimitris Boutsalis. Previously working in the famously boundary-pushing restaurant Noma, he brings his skills back to his native soil where he serves delicious meals with a local twist, using regionally sourced produce. Experience the traditional flavors of Greek cuisine at the Beach Club, or savor delicious sushi and washoku Japanese dishes at Nama (Aman’s signature restaurant worldwide).

Immerse yourself in your surroundings with the many activities on offer at Amanzoe. Sample the region’s famous citrus fruits, sweet olives and diverse seafood on a culinary discovery, or learn about Greek wine with a tasting session. For an ocean-based adventure, charter one of Amanzoe’s high-speed watercrafts for a tour of the uninhabited isles and secluded coves off the coast of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Sustainability

Around 60-70% of all ingredients hail from Greece, with the chefs working on reducing the overall sourcing radius to a 100-mile area (but most produce is sourced from within 25 miles). They have their own traditional bostani (garden) where they grow vegetables, fruit and herbs to serve at the resort. Amanzoe was designed in a bioclimatic architectural style, being ecologically sensitive in a way that aligns with nature. PV panels heat the water, with more than 7,000 meters of green roofs insulating the building, capturing rainwater, processing greenhouse gasses and attracting wildlife

Why we love it

Wellness is at the heart of Amanzoe, and as soon as you enter this impressive property, it’s hard not to feel immediately lighter. Inspired by the philosophy of Greek medicine and the healings of Hippocrates, the spa offers massages and facials using their own range of natural products as well as a range of holistic therapies (think Pilates, yoga and aquatic bodywork). Far from being confined to the past, the resort has introduced several new treatments using modern science and the latest technology with instantly visible results. The spa also offers a number of excellent wellness retreats led by experts in their field.
