Frequently asked questions

Around a third of Socotra's plant life exists nowhere else on earth. The dragon blood tree, with its inverted umbrella canopy and deep crimson sap, is the most visible symbol of that isolation, but the island's endemic species extend to birds, reptiles and flora that have evolved in near-total separation for millions of years.

Socotra has no conventional hotels. Pelorus arranges private mobile camps positioned to place you in the landscape rather than apart from it, whether that's beneath the dragon blood forests of the Haghier Mountains or beside the white dunes at Detwah Lagoon. Accommodation is part of how the island is experienced here.

The best time to visit Socotra is between October and May, when the weather is mild, and you can fully enjoy outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting. June to September brings the monsoon.

Socotra sits roughly 240 kilometers off the Horn of Africa, in the Arabian Sea. There are no direct commercial routes from Europe or the US. Pelorus handles the full logistics, including private charter access via Pelorus Aviation, which removes the dependency on infrequent scheduled services and gives you control over your travel window.

Yes. Socotra was inscribed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 2008, recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and the extraordinary number of species found nowhere else on the planet. It is one of the few places whose designation feels like an understatement rather than a formality.

"Pelorus’ in-house team approach each inquiry from every imaginable angle to create an adventure that will surpass your expectations."
