Hotel Castello di Reschio

Umbria, Italy

Overview

An enchanting castle in the Umbrian hills, carefully restored to create the ultimate luxurious Italian escape, Castello di Reschio is the stylish success story of where an inspirational vision meets meticulous architectural execution. On this vast estate, a stable of Andalucian dressage horses, a subterranean spa, an extraordinary range of activities and two excellent restaurants await the most discerning of travelers.

Key Features

  • 36 rooms and suites split between the castle and the ex-vestry of an adjacent church
  • Two restaurants: one offering an elegant take on traditional Italian specialities served in the castle ramparts, and the second presenting rustic, local dishes served in the old stables
  • The spa is housed in the old wine cellars and offers a range of holistic treatments, and features a saltwater pool inspired by the Roman baths, two treatment rooms, a sauna and a hammam
  • Activities include riding, truffle-hunting, clay-pigeon shooting, cookery classes, foraging, and wine and olive oil tasting (the estate produces both)

The Castello dates back to 1050 but has recently undergone a lengthy restoration process to transform it into a unique hotel. Nestled amidst Umbria’s rolling green hills, Castello di Reschio was rescued from total decay by its owners, acclaimed architect Count Benedikt Bolza and his wife, artist Donna Nencia Corsini.

Using a team of skilled local artisans, the family set about restoring this storied building, leaving original features (arches, beams, vaulted ceilings, stone fireplaces) intact but adding their own eclectic mix of bespoke furniture and finds from antique markets.

There are 36 rooms and suites here, each very different from the next and split between the castle itself and the ex-vestry of an adjacent church. The designs pay homage to either a past resident of the castle, a family member, or the room’s past use, as well as being filled with Count Benedikt’s own bespoke furniture and antiques. The most impressive is the castle’s tower: a whole five-floor suite with incredible panoramas and an open-air tub.

Cuisine

There’s a distinct farm-to-table policy here, with as much produce as possible coming either from the estate itself (they have a kitchen garden, olive groves, beehives and vineyards as well as wild boar and deer) or within the immediate area. Guests can opt for the elegant Al Castello restaurant located in the castle ramparts, or the more rustic Alle Scuderie occupying the ex-stables.

Down in the castle’s ancient wine cellars, the otherworldly Bathhouse is a dreamy retreat. Worn stone steps lead down to this sanctuary inspired by the Roman baths of old, where you can find a large saltwater pool, two treatment rooms, a sauna and a hammam. Partnering with a medical specialist to create a unique combination of personalized treatments, everything here is utterly bespoke, focusing on your specific needs so you emerge feeling relaxed and re-energized.

Sustainability

The ethos of restoration is deeply embedded in the essence of Hotel Castello di Reschio, where a meticulous focus on reusing, repurposing, and upcycling materials is integral to the vision of revitalizing the estate, regenerating the local area, and creating a lasting legacy for future generations. Through strategic replanting and thoughtful landscaping, native plants and flowers have thrived, leading to an augmented presence of bees, butterflies, and nightingales, ultimately enhancing the biodiversity of the surrounding area. The commitment to sustainability extends to the culinary offerings, with exclusively organic food, either cultivated onsite or procured from local farmers, underscoring the dedication to environmentally conscious practices.

Why we love it

Staying here feels like something out of a fairytale as you wake every morning in a castle overlooking the Umbrian hills. In the grounds there are peaceful lakes, truffle-hunting trails, nature hikes, clay-pigeon shooting, bikes to borrow, tennis courts, a cooking school, an enoteca stocked with local wine and a bottega selling Italian-made curios and locally grown produce. There’s also a magnificent equestrian center home to some of the world’s most skilled dressage horses and expert instructors.
