Benesse House

Naoshima, Japan

Overview

One of the best contemporary art museums in the world, Benesse House is the soul of Naoshima Island. A flourishing landscape peppered with avant-garde structures, the museum perfectly complements the coexistence of nature, art and architecture.

Key Features

  • Four choices of artistic accommodation, each with a unique perspective from the balcony
  • Adorned with displays of innovative contemporary art in every guest room
  • Spa therapies, including Naoshima signature treatment of exfoliating foot scrub
  • Two restaurants specializing in authentic French and Japanese cuisine
  • Exclusive Park Lounge with a wide selection of books on art
  • Art installations positioned around the island, including by the shore and forest

Design

Stay in one of four buildings designed by esteemed Japanese architect, Tadao Ando. With varied designs and structures in neutral tones, each guest room is a minimalist masterpiece. Imitate the feeling of floating in the sea in the idyllic Beach house; discover the high vantage point in the Oval rooms, decorated with artists’ drawings and murals; survey the landscape on the Park’s verandas looking out to the Shikoku Mountains and the Seto Inland Sea. Natural settings contrast the striking ocean views.

Cuisine

The Terrace Restaurant’s lofty high ceilings and vast windows create an airy dining experience. Sample traditional Kiseki in Benesse’s signature Japanese restaurant or try the fresh sea bass while looking out to the Seto Inland Sea.

Why we love it

With the galleries only moments from your door, you can visit after-hours to experience the best of the museum including Andy Warhol and David Hockney originals alongside Hiroshi Sugimoto and David Long pieces. Not just inside, the art installations can be found scattered across the island, by the seashore and in the forests.

Tired feet after a day of wandering the gallery’s halls? Book yourself in for a treatment at the spa, where the Naoshima signature treatment will exfoliate your feet and make them feel new again.
