Benguerra Island

In a trip sure to excite marine fanatics, adventure enthusiasts and budding conservationists alike, join researchers on a 5-day adventure that will see you exploring one of the most beautiful marine regions in the world. After landing in Mozambique, a short helicopter flight will take you to Benguerra Island where you will arrive in time for lunch. Then, spend the rest of your afternoon exploring your surrounds and settling in before heading to the lodge library for a briefing hosted by the lead research scientist, setting the scene for what you can expect over the course of the next few days. From the importance of coral reef ecosystems, climate and people and their interconnection, together with the conservation role of apex predator tagging, you’ll get a glimpse of what’s to come.

Education & Conservation

Awake early the next morning to follow the research boat out to sea as they search for marine predator species (think giant trevally and gray reef sharks). Your host will share first-hand insights into the marine research happening within the archipelago. Time dependant, you may also have the opportunity for catch-and-release fishing before breaking for lunch back at the lodge.

Activities

Unwind and freshen up before an afternoon of activities: embark on a horseback ride on the beach or enjoy a scenic helicopter flight over the marine park in search of the elusive dugong and whales. A beachfront dinner with a representative from African Parks will enlighten you about the fascinating local projects and measures being taken to protect Mozambique’s waters.

Marine Excursions

On your third day, make a splash on a scuba diving or snorkeling excursion to a nearby coral reef. Get up close with the marine habitats you’ve been learning about and witness the beauty and fragility these researchers work so hard to protect.

Marine Conservation

Spend the afternoon on an island drive where you’ll visit some current Africa Foundation community projects and witness the important role played by these island communities in marine conservation. Enjoy a sundowner on the island’s “wild side” among pristine sand dunes for a spectacular end to the day.

Island Life

Spend your penultimate day either heading out with the research team to fish for and tag predator species, or simply spending the morning relaxing at the lodge and enjoying the many activities on offer. For lunch, you’ll be whisked away for an island picnic on the northern point of Benguerra where you will celebrate your expedition’s success with the research team.

Island Life

In the late afternoon, meet at the dreamy Dhow Bar – the perfect spot to indulge in an ice-cold cocktail – where you’ll have the chance to see a VEMCO receiver (used to detect and decode transmissions from fish tags), learn more about hydrophones (used for recording underwater) and even get to listen to the signals from the tags.

Island Life

Spend your final morning on Benguerra Island at leisure, before a helicopter flight back to the mainland to catch your onward flight.
