Location

The eastern corner of Tanzania’s Serengeti is known as big cat country, and here, in the middle of the sprawling savanna, you will find Namiri Plains. Soit Le Motonyi, the private surrounding area, was closed for two decades to allow the cheetah population to recover. It is now exclusive to guests staying at Namiri Plains, and remains one of the Serengeti’s most beautiful, secluded regions, far from the beaten track. Scattered across the landscape, the camp’s low-slung tented suites pan out onto a flat stretch of grassland that disappears into the horizon. Skulking around the premises are cheetahs, lions, and leopards trailing unsuspecting prey, exposing you to the raw Serengeti wilderness. Between October and May, herds of the Great Migration flock to the nearby Ngare Nanyuki River, keeping you occupied with spectacular game viewing and the predator population well fed.

Design

Woven inconspicuously into the surrounding landscape with khaki canvas tents, the camp is built from local wood, canvas, and stone made of solidified volcanic ash found at Lake Manyara. Its interiors, designed by safari specialist Caline Williams-Wynn, are emphatically chic with slouchy leather couches, macramé wall hangings, rattan furniture, and woven baskets. Eleven spacious, open-plan suites come with sweeping vistas of the savanna through walled windows, and their own private veranda with a resin bathtub, so you can quite literally soak up the views. The central lodge is stylish and contemporary with a tasteful palette of cream, saffron, gray, and layered natural textures. It features an extended lounge and dining area with a marbled stone bar, a long veranda with outside seating, and beyond this a large pool with woven hammocks.

Activities

While game viewing can take place from the comfort of your king-sized bed or the bathtub on your private veranda, it is worth venturing out for the full Serengeti safari experience. Roll out onto the plains in a 4x4 safari vehicle or set out on foot with an experienced guide to learn more about indigenous flora and fauna. Explore acacia woodlands, rocky kopjes, and pockets of water that rise from the river, enticing herds of zebra, buffalo, and spotted hyenas. Cheetah spotting is a thrilling activity for big cat enthusiasts, tracking trails and learning about their behavior with an expert local researcher. The entire day can be spent in the bush with beautifully laid picnics, or alternatively back at camp cooling off in the pool, browsing the charming library, or indulging in a bespoke massage at the spa.

Sustainability

Namiri Plains has a light-on-the-land ethos, connecting every aspect of your stay to the preservation of the area’s endangered wildlife species, landscape, and local communities. The camp is built from locally sourced materials, powered by a 24-hour supply of solar energy, and fitted with a gray-water recycling system to minimize its environmental impact. Conservation-based safaris allow guests to get involved with wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, community education and anti-poaching patrols as part of a pledge to keep tourism sustainable.

Why we love it

After decades of dedicated conservation action to protect the Soit Le Motonyi area, it has become one of the richest landscapes in Tanzania’s Serengeti, thriving with wildlife. It is rare to find a luxury stay so deeply in tune with its environment, and Namiri Plains allows you to experience this connection for yourself, in complete privacy.
