Location

Located in the southeast corner of Península Valdés, this beautiful stretch of Argentine coastline is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity and untouched natural beauty. Dubbed the “secret jewel of Atlantic Patagonia”, this area of the private reserve is exclusive to those staying at Estancia Rincón Chico, with very few other lodges in the area. Aside from miles of windswept sands, dramatic cliffs, wild steppe, and turquoise waters, your only neighbours are the seals, whales, and penguins.

Design

While still a working estancia rearing merino sheep, as well as a scientific base for wildlife researchers, the property has been tastefully adapted to host guests with modern comforts and stylish interiors. Rooted in classic Patagonian architecture, the building is modeled on the original 19th century homestead that stands nearby. Inside, fossils and shells are strewn across antique countertops, and a palette of natural textures and sandy tones reflect the hues of Patagonian steppe. Eight charming beachfront bedrooms feature deep-soak bathtubs and open onto a shaded veranda – an idyllic spot for watching whales breaching offshore and guanacos grazing nearby.

Activities

While wildlife watching can take place at the lodge, the vast 890,000-acre expanse of protected Atlantic coastline invites deeper exploration. Set out on guided excursions with a biologist or conservationist on foot, by bike, or in a 4x4 to track and observe the region’s native species – elephant seals, sea lions, grey foxes, guanacos and a remarkable array of marine birds. Private boat excursions can be arranged, bringing you up close to vast numbers of southern right whales, orcas and dolphins – this is one of the best places on Earth to observe these species in the wild. After a long day of adventure, return to the lodge for a delicious family-style meal, indulging in the rich flavours of regional dishes and a selection of fine wines from Argentina.
