Location

The Iberá National Park is known as “one of South America’s last great wildernesses”, and here, in the middle of the vast, palm-fringed wetlands, you will find Rincón del Socorro. Spanning 1.7 million acres of gallery forests, flooded grasslands, and lush palm groves, this is the second largest wetland on earth. For decades, its ecosystems were neglected and depleted due to poaching and deforestation and it was not until the early 2000s, when eco-philanthropists Doug and Kris Tompkins acquired the land and began their ambitious conservation project here, that degraded landscapes began to transform into thriving habitats. Locally extinct species have returned, and this is now one of the only places in Argentina where you can find jaguars, giant anteaters, collared peccaries, and red macaws.

Design

This beautifully restored estancia retains its classic Spanish-colonial architecture, with low-slung ceilings, shaded galleries and sloping roofs to keep the seasonal rains at bay. Interiors are rustic and cosy, adorned with handwoven throws, slouchy couches, and wooden antiques. Each of the eleven suites come with sweeping vistas of the expansive wetlands through panelled windows, and a private veranda, where you can lie peacefully on cushioned sun loungers watching marsh deer and capybara wander by. There is a lounge with a stone hearth, a charming library, and a refreshing pool lined with terracotta tiles.

Activities

Awaken your senses on wildlife safaris, discovering the area’s diverse ecosystems with expert guides. Traverse flooded grasslands, palm groves, and gallery forests on foot, horseback, bike, or in a 4x4 safari vehicle, tracking greater rheas (flightless birds similar to ostriches), collared peccary, howler monkey, and jaguars. Night safaris reveal the reserve’s nocturnal wildlife, while birdwatching excursions uncover species as rare and remarkable as their names - like the strange-tailed tyrant and southern screamer. Sail across the tranquil waters of the Iberá Lagoon, paddle kayaks amongst the floating islands, and visit local communities in Uguay. In the evenings, gather for a traditional Argentine asado, watching an exceptional culinary team prepare the region’s finest meats and vegetables over a flaming fire.

Sustainability

For over two decades, Rincón del Socorro has served as a base of operations for one of the most ambitious rewilding projects in the Americas, hosting biologists and environmentalists from across the globe. The area is now more beautiful and biodiverse than ever, and the lodge, which is entirely powered by solar energy, continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable practices, enriching the land and local communities through ongoing restoration projects. From wildlife monitoring to habitat restoration, there are many conservation programmes you can get involved in during your stay.

Why we love it

It is rare to find a luxury stay so deeply attuned to its environment, and Rincón del Socorro allows you to experience this harmony in serene, secluded comfort.
