Location

Located in a remote corner the Tinajani Canyon, the camp overlooks an enchanting landscape of red sandstone, carved by the erosion of a prehistoric lake. Known as "The Canyon of the Guardians," myths tell of ancient giants that were turned to stone by the gods, now watching over this mystical landscape as towering boulders. Rich in history and an almost otherworldly natural grandeur, this corner of the Andes is sure to leave you with a profound sense of awe. The indigenous Uros people have lived here since pre-Incan period, retaining their ancient customs, traditions, and artisan crafts.

Design

Woven into the landscape with khaki canvas tents, the camp draws inspiration from early 20th-century Andean explorers. Each campamento comprises two spacious canvas tents – one for sleeping, the other for lounging – alongside a terrace with a private hot tub and vistas of the canyon. Inside, soft alpaca-wool throws, wood-burning stoves, and cushioned seating areas offer comfort after a long day of adventure. Elevated boardwalks connect the tents to a restored Andean farmhouse, reimagined as a cozy communal space with vintage furnishings, colorful Peruvian rugs, and a candlelit terrace perfect for al fresco dining.

Activities

Explore the landscapes around Tinajani Canyon, venturing into the vast Puya de Raimondi forest. Hike or e-bike along winding dirt trails, leading to a valley where thousands of towering puyas, resembling huge cactuses, rise over the highlands. As you wander through this surreal botanical wilderness, delve into ancient plant wisdom with a natural herbalist. Stroll through the town square to visit the Church of San Francisco de Asís, built on the foundations of an ancient Inca temple. Journey to Lake Titicaca to explore its floating islands, or to the Colca Valley for a day of horseback riding through the Andes. Return to the camp to share tales from your adventures around a roaring fire and gaze up at the night sky with an expert astronomer, learning about constellations and how they guide the life and traditions of Andean people to this day.

Sustainability

Environmental and cultural conservation forms the foundation of a stay at Tinajani. Powered by solar energy and fitted with a greywater recycling system, the camp operates completely off-grid. Every experience is crafted with intent in partnership with local communities – from farmers and herbalists to artisans and guides. Tinajani fosters a culture of reciprocity and a deep respect for the way of life of the remote, indigenous communities in this area of Peru.
