Design

The thatched rooves and wooden frames of the cottages echo their stunning natural surroundings, blending beautifully with the shady trees and lush vegetation. Rooms are simply furnished with large beds and local textiles, while wide double doors lead out onto the soft sandy beach beyond.

Wildlife

The island’s wildlife is diverse as it is plentiful; see the watchful eyes of crocs and hippos lurking in the shallows of the lake, while elephants amble through the dense undergrowth and Colobus monkeys swing overhead. With the camp’s unique location, the forest is truly at your fingertips. Experienced guides will meet you in the early morning for intrepid treks through the tropical woodland or gentle cruises across the dazzling lake. Imparting their wealth of knowledge on this enthralling landscape, they will ensure you see these majestic animals at their most active, at peace in their natural habitat.

Cuisine

After a day of adventure in the wilderness, sip on sunset cocktails with the sand between your toes and unwind to the noise of the crackling campfire. Delight in alfresco meals next to the pool, with spectacular views out over the lake – everything is homemade and lovingly prepared by the attentive staff.

Sustainability

Asilia works with the local community in conservation and education, including an Asilia scholarship fund. They have a highly successful chimpanzee habituation project, focusing on conservation and the introduction of chimpanzees to humans and they used natural, local building materials for all the cottages.

Why we love it

As part of a huge endangered species conservation effort in the 60s, 16 chimpanzees were released into the wild on Rubondo Island. A resounding success, the now thriving population is under constant surveillance and protection from a charity foundations and the local community. Join experienced guides tracking these majestic animals through the dense jungle – this is a magical experience which will stay with you for life.
