Location

Set against a backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains and vast open skies, Smith Fork Ranch is celebrated for its scenic hiking trails and panoramic mountain views. Nestled between the West Welk Wilderness and the Gunnison National Forest, the ranch overlooks a diverse landscape of towering volcanic peaks, dense aspen groves, black canyons, and lush meadows where elk and deer graze. Here, the sun rises over Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, and sets over Needle Rock in the west. The region is often referred to as the “fruit and wine basket of the Rockies”, offering a delightful array of wineries and organic farms. At an altitude of over 7,000 feet, it is one of North America’s most distinctive wine regions, perfect for an artisanal winemaking experience in an alpine setting.

Design

This traditional homestead offers a series of renovated log homes and cabins dating back to 1928. Designed to honour its western heritage, the ranch is built from exposed timber beams, wide-plank floors, and river rock. Each cabin or home is uniquely styled with Navajo textiles, American antiques, and original works from Native artists and artisans. The largest, Marley’s Lodge, boasts six cozy bedrooms, a private porch overlooking Saddle Mountain, a gym, chef’s kitchen, and a spacious lounge with a large stone fireplace. Communal spaces include a rustic bar and lounge with a pool table, a quiet spa cabin offering custom treatments, and a pavilion designed to host up to 40 guests with a dance floor and terrace for al fresco dining.

Activities

From horseback rides through the Rockies to line dancing under the stars, Smith Fork Ranch offers a collection of experiences designed to immerse guests in the spirit of the American West. Hike through verdant wilderness with experienced wranglers, soar over the Black Canyon in a helicopter, or cast a line for the rare Colorado cutthroat trout on guided fishing expeditions. Visit nearby organic farms, vineyards, and wineries for artisanal tastings, or browse the ranch’s extensive wine cellar. After a long day of outdoor activities, cool off with a swim in the spring-fed pond or unwind with a massage before gathering around the fire pit for songs and s’mores as the sun sets.

Dining

Smith Fork Ranch celebrates the culinary heritage of this fertile region with a farm-to-table dining ethos, sourcing ingredients sustainably from its own gardens and neighboring farms. Menus change daily to reflect the seasons, and meals are served in ever-changing locations, from the riverbank to a lantern-lit table in the Bell, a cabin inspired by a traditional Western diner. Breakfast options include a country cookout in the mountains or a ranch buffet, while sundowners and appetizers are served around the fire pit before evening meals. Take part in cooking classes or wild foraging excursions and select fine wines from the cellar to pair with meals, adding a refined touch to the ranch’s culinary experience.

Why we love it

Perfect for hosting large groups, families, and events, Smith Fork Ranch transforms its historic log homes and wild surroundings into a completely private wilderness retreat. From its authentic Western experiences to its award-winning wine cellar, this remote ranch truly captures the spirit of the American West.
