Location

Set on a hillside on a private concession, ol Donyo occupies a spectacular position in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, between the renowned Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks. The ranch is owned by approximately 4,000 Maasai, placing the lodge within a landscape where wildlife conservation and local livelihoods are closely connected. Below, vast plains extend towards Mount Kilimanjaro, whose snow-capped summit can appear on clear days. This private setting offers a compelling alternative to Kenya’s busier safari regions, with wildlife including elephants, giraffes, big cats and abundant birdlife. Access is typically by light aircraft to the Chyulu airstrip, followed by a road transfer through the wilderness.

DESIGN

ol Donyo blends contemporary safari style with touches inspired by Maasai culture and the surrounding landscape. Its eight Pool Suites and two-bedroom Sambu Suite are spaced out for privacy, each offering expansive views across the plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro. Each has indoor and covered outdoor living areas, a private veranda and pool, as well as a large en-suite bathroom with a bath and indoor and outdoor showers. Up on the roof, private star beds are set up for sleeping outside beneath the African night sky, surrounded by the sounds of the bush. Throughout the lodge, natural materials, thatch and locally inspired artwork keep the interiors connected to their setting, while shared spaces include a fire deck overlooking the surrounding landscape.

ACTIVITIES

Few safari lodges offer quite as many ways to explore. Set out on day and night game drives, walk the plains with expert guides or, for experienced riders, cross the wilderness on horseback, watching for giraffe, elephant and plains game along the way. Two photographic hides beside the nearby waterhole create exceptionally intimate wildlife encounters, while helicopter flights reveal the Chyulu Hills and wider Amboseli landscape from above. Cultural experiences can include visits to Maasai homesteads, local markets and community initiatives. Back at the lodge, unwind with a spa treatment or visit the gym. Dining is equally exceptional from refined lodge meals to bush breakfasts and lunches beside the waterhole, with fresh produce supported by Great Plains’ farm-to-fork approach.
