Hoanib Valley Camp

Kaokoland, Namibia

Overview

Hoanib Valley Camp is set in a remote corner of north-west Namibia, overlooking a dry river valley, carved through stark rocky terrain. Built to sit low in the landscape, the camp offers uninterrupted views of this immense desert landscape, a strong sense of seclusion and direct access to one of the country’s most sparsely visited wilderness areas.

Key Features

  • Six elegantly simple tented suites, including five twins and one family tent, are positioned to maximize privacy and expansive desert views, and a relaxed central hub with pool, lounge and dining spaces provides a comfortable base between excursions.
  • Set deep within the Hoanib River Valley of north-west Namibia, the camp is surrounded by stark plains, rugged mountains and ancient riverbeds, in the heart of the untouched region of Kaokoland, the historical home of the indigenous Himba people.
  • Activities on offer at the camp include desert game drives, nature walks, wildlife tracking, cultural visits and time spent simply observing the landscape, allowing you to engage with the environment at an unhurried pace.
  • The camp utilizes solar power and a low-impact operating model, developed in partnership with the local conservancy, and supports conservation while creating tangible benefits for surrounding communities.

Location

Hoanib Valley Camp is located in north-west Namibia, within the remote Kaokoland region, an area defined by vast open spaces and a striking sense of isolation. The camp overlooks the dry Hoanib River, whose broad sandy channels cut through a dramatic desert landscape of rocky hills and wide plains. This is one of the country’s least visited regions, reached by light aircraft, and the journey itself reinforces the feeling of remoteness. Despite the arid setting, the river valley supports desert-adapted wildlife, and the surrounding terrain shifts constantly in color and texture throughout the day. The location offers a rare opportunity to experience Namibia at its most raw and uncompromising.

Design

The camp is designed to sit quietly within its desert surroundings, with low-profile structures that follow the natural contours of the valley. The 6 tented suites are built from canvas, timber and stone, using muted tones that echo the colors of the surrounding plains, each opening onto a shaded deck with long views across the riverbed. At the heart of the camp, the open-sided lounge and dining areas create a natural gathering point, while the swimming pool is positioned to overlook the dry landscape beyond. Throughout, the design is practical and uncluttered, shaped by climate and setting, and focused on comfort without distracting from the environment.

Activities

Experiences at Hoanib Valley Camp are shaped by the surrounding desert and led by guides with deep knowledge of the area. Nature drives and nature walks explore the Hoanib River valley in detail, from its shifting geology to the smaller details often missed from a vehicle. Specialist excursions include rhino tracking on foot and a giraffe conservation chat and drive, offering insight into the work being done to protect desert-adapted species. Cultural experiences introduce you to local communities and traditions, adding valuable context to the landscape. Between activities, the swimming pool provides a welcome place to cool off while taking in the stillness of the valley.

Sustainability

Hoanib Valley Camp is designed as a clean and considered operation, leaving virtually no footprint on the fragile desert ecosystem. The entire camp is solar powered, keeping carbon emissions to a minimum in an environment where resources are scarce and carefully managed. Tented suites are raised on decks constructed from a composite of wood, bamboo and 70 percent recycled materials, allowing the landscape beneath to remain undisturbed. This light-touch approach extends to the overall layout and daily operations, ensuring the camp can exist in balance with its surroundings. The result is a model of low-impact tourism that protects the character and integrity of the Hoanib Valley.

Why we love it

Hoanib Valley Camp stands out for the way it strips the Namibian luxury safari experience back to its essentials, placing landscape, knowledge and time firmly at the center. The combination of genuinely remote desert scenery, thoughtful guiding and a noticeably light footprint creates a stay that feels purposeful and immersive.
