Sleep under the stars
Begin your experience in the heart of Damaraland, a region composed of rolling hills, rocky outcrops and distant mountain ranges. Home to some of the most fascinating rock paintings and engravings ever to be discovered, this is the perfect starting point to learn about the history of this land, with the etchings of this ‘open-air gallery’ dating back between 2,000 – 10,000 years ago.
Tribal stories tell tales of hunting, gathering and life in the desert, with the stars forming a key part of the beliefs of the indigenous people, where they were considered to represent their ancestors who now watch down from above. Another story tells of a lonely young girl who awaits the return of her hunter companions as night falls. To light their way in the dark she throws up a handful of white wood-ash. This becomes the Milky Way, and so, even when there is no moon, its shining light guides the hunters home. Spend your nights in the cleverly designed beds at Onduli Ridge, which can be rolled out onto your wrap-around deck so you are able to fall asleep gazing up at the night sky.
