Location

Sitting majestically above the town of Jomsom at the gateway to Upper Mustang, once known as the Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, Shinta Mani Mustang is located in an otherwise isolated area, previously inaccessible to outsiders for centuries. In one of the deepest valleys in the region, it’s hidden between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges – two of Nepal’s most iconic regions.

Design

Designed by famed architect Bill Bensley with a deep respect to the location and its people, Shinta Mani Mustang resembles a traditional Tibetan home with an open-planned bedroom combined with a living area and separate bathroom. Each of the 29 suites boast floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the incredible mountain vistas, which can also be admired from the terraces around the property. Interiors are adorned with locally-sourced natural fabrics and upcycled furniture, with complementary artwork from the late artist Robert Powell.

Sustainability

The property works alongside the non-profit Psang Lhamu Foundation to empower marginalized women and children from Nepal’s high mountain communities through healthcare and hospital support, education and scholarships, and vocational training. Recycled materials have been repurposed into unique new furniture through the interiors.

Activities

With Buddhist monasteries dotted about the landscape, this spiritual destination offers a moment for reflection as well as excellent outdoor opportunities including trekking, horseback riding and cycling. While away the hours in the calming wellness center, where you can enjoy a bespoke herbal medicine program curated by an 11th generation traditional Tibetan healer in one of the two treatment suites facing the mountains, also home to a hot plunge pool, steam room and sauna.

Cuisine

The restaurant serves modern Nepali and international cuisine showcasing locally sourced produce. Dine either in the main dining room or out on the large outdoor patio for some majestic mountain views. There’s also a bar named after an exotic local Tibetan and Sherpa liquor – Aara.

Why we love it

This area of Nepal is rife with activities such as mountain biking, hiking, archery, and horse riding. For those who want to uncover the rich history and culture of the region, trips to ancient villages, the sky caves, and temples are on the menu. Each activity is led by an experienced guide who will take guests on a personalized experience, from rarely traveled trails to dramatic gourmet picnic stop-offs.
