Wildebeest and zebras walking past the delta in Tanzania on a luxury Tanzania Safari

Best time to visit Tanzania

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Jun-Oct

With a high game concentration around water sources and the famous wildebeest migration occurring, these months are perfect for witnessing the Big 5 and enjoying game drives in the dry season.

Nov-Mar

Expect to witness the wildebeest congregating and calving in the Southern Serengeti and take in the lush and green scenery as the seasons start to change, as the rainy season approaches in late March and April.

“I love this time of year (November-March) for its sense of calm, the parks are lush and quiet, and every encounter feels more intimate.”

Frequently asked questions

If you wish to travel in peak season (between June and September), lodges and camps are in high demand, so early planning is essential for travelers seeking the most exclusive accommodations. We usually recommend booking 8-12 months in advance for summer bookings and 4-6 months for bookings between January to March.

While Tanzania is a year-round destination, the rainy season from mid-March to May is generally considered the least favourable time to visit. Heavy rainfall can make certain roads impassable and may limit access to remote safari areas, particularly in the Selous, Ruaha, and parts of the Serengeti.

That said, this period, known as the long rains, also brings lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and fewer visitors. For travelers seeking complete privacy or a focus on photography and conservation, Pelorus can still design exceptional safaris during this time.

In Tanzania, the best time to witness the Great Migration is from July to October, when the herds cross crocodile-infested rivers in the northern Serengeti. Pelorus offer a unique way to view this incredible natural phenomenon from above. Soar above the crowds in a helicopter for a panoramic view like no other. Earlier in the year, from January to March, the southern Serengeti comes alive as calving season begins, attracting predators and providing dramatic wildlife encounters.

However, there is much to see throughout the year, as the animals in the Serengeti plains of Africa, including lions, elephants, cheetahs, and more, create a dynamic and ever-changing safari experience.

July to October are perfect months for combining the thrill of Tanzania with relaxing on Zanzibar’s beaches. Travelers can easily combine a Tanzania safari with a Zanzibar island retreat, moving seamlessly from game drives in the Ngorongoro Crater or Ruaha National Park to diving, sailing, or unwinding in a private coastal villa.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from July to October, when the weather is warm, dry, and perfect for swimming, sailing, and exploring the islands. Clear skies and calm seas make this an ideal time to relax on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches.
